- Use as toothpaste.
- It can be used as a mouthwash by adding a little water after you clean your teeth. Don’t spit the charcoal out, pop your toothbrush under the tap, suck the water into your mouth and slosh it around for a minute or so.
- It can be used for oil pulling by adding 1 Tbsp. of coconut oil and swooshing it around in your mouth for about 10 minutes.
- OPTION – add your won coconut oil to get the consistency you like (there is room in the pot for this)
If you are concerned with the abrasive quality of this product, please simple press it against your teeth, rub gently with your finger or your toothbrush to spread it around, and then ‘swoosh’ it around your mouth for 1-3 minutes.
HOW TO USE:
- Wet your toothbrush, shake off any excess water.
- Close your lips around the toothbrush and brush your teeth for about 2 minutes.
- Keep your lips closed and your head up to try and keep it in your mouth. It can get quite messy if it drips, so take care.
- When you are done, lean over the sink and open your mouth to let the mixture ‘fall’ into the drain. If you ‘spit’ it splashes everywhere!
- I have a cup by the sink filled with water, and I use it to rinse my mouth 3-4 times until it is clear. I then floss.
- If you swallow some, don’t worry – it is all natural and very safe.
What are the ingredients?
Food grade, CSIRO certified, 100% pure Australian clay, sun dried, bentonite clay
Food grade, 100% biodegradable activated coconut charcoal
Raw, cold-pressed, extra-virgin, certified organic coconut oil
Food grade, freshwater diatomaceous earth
Aluminium free baking soda
100% pure, certified organic stevia extract powder
dōTERRA Peppermint essential oil
Why these ingredients?
Bentonite Clay Yes, I’m talking about the grey powder that I use as a face and foot mask, and that I add to my magnesium baths to soak in. Bentonite clay binds to unhealthy substances in the mouth, teeth, tongue and gums, and helps to remove them before you swallow them. It is a gentle cleanser that is rich in minerals known to help remineralize teeth. Its detoxifying properties help freshen breath and fight gum disease, while it’s adsorptive properties help remove stains from teeth.
Activated Charcoal – also called activated carbon – has been around for thousands of years. It was even used by Hippocrates Pliny in their day. Carbon brightens and whitens the teeth and removes acidic plaque. It attracts substances to its surface like a magnet. It absorbs certain substances and prevents our bodies from using them.
It will not absorb calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, inorganic phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc and other compounds necessary for good oral health. It will, however absorb tannins –found in coffee, tea (even herbal tea), blueberries, wine and spices like cinnamon that stain our teeth. Activated charcoal also balances the mouth’s pH and is often used to re-mineralization teeth.
Coconut Oil adds antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. A study done at the Athlone Institute of Technology on different oils and their benefits toward mouth health, shows coconut oil to be the best. Coconut oil, when treated with digestive enzymes, does an excellent job at stopping bacterial growth in the mouth that is responsible for dental cavities.
Baking Soda helps with whitening. It is a mild abrasive that helps remove stains while the other ingredients draw them out. It also helps freshen breath.
dōTERRA Peppermint essential oil is naturally antimicrobial and has been shown to inhibit the formation of biofilm formations (dental plaque) linked to dental cavities.
Stevia reduces bacterial formation in the mouth and adds a little sweetness to the mix.
Are there any chemicals in the product?
No, Black Magic is 100% natural
What happens if swallowed?
Nothing. Black Magic is made with organic food grade ingredients.
What Does it Taste Like?
“Just like toothpaste” according to my daughter, Charli. It is flavoured with peppermint, so it tastes like that, with a hint of sweetness from the stevia.
How often can I use it?
Whenever you feel like it – every day is fine.
How much do I use?
Very little of the powder is needed, use just enough to cover the top of the bristles.
Is it safe for kids?
Absolutely! Black Magic came about because of my daughter Charli. At age 11, she wanted whiter teeth. I wasn’t about to use a commercial treatment for her, so tada! Black magic was ‘born’.
Does it stain my clothes?
Yes, it stains everything. My daughter asked me this question one night when she had a HUGE black stain down the front of her favourite nightshirt. Whoops. Thank goodness for stain remover and the fact the shirt was grey. (Yes, we saved the shirt!). I would recommend the paste over the powder for kids – much less chance of mess!
Is it ok for use with sensitive teeth or gums?
Yes, I have very sensitive gums and it’s fine (and I use it with an electric toothbrush). Black Magic is non-irritating, use a soft bristle toothbrush if necessary.
Do I brush my teeth with normal toothpaste as well?
That was how I started – I used normal toothpaste morning and night, then used Black Magic for a one minute clean and a 2 minute ‘swoosh’. This soon morphed into full blown Black Magic usage and a tossing out of the Grants Natural Toothpaste. Well, I didn’t throw it out, it is the
Can I use it with braces?
It is a good idea to wait until the braces come off as the product won’t whiten underneath them.
I have dental work done. Can I use it?
Please try Black Magic on a small, hidden part first to see what happens or check with your dentist. People can use this product to clean their dentures. There are no chemical bleaches used, so you don’t have to worry about Black Magic harming dental work, like you would chemical whitening treatments. Because of liability reasons, we have to tell you to use this on dental work at your own risk.
I am pregnant. Can I use it?
All ingredients are natural, so there should be no problem, however, Because of liability reasons, we have to tell you to use check with your health practitioner first.
How soon can I see results?
Results vary from person to person. My daughter saw results within 2 days and it took me a couple of weeks. Black Magic has no chemical whiteners in it, and will not make your teeth whiter than white. It won’t whiten teeth that are yellow from medication or age. It will remove stains from coffee, wine, blueberries etc.
Can it damage the enamel on my teeth?
No, it will strengthen the enamel due to the charcoal and bentonite clay (used to remineralise the teeth). If you are concerned about erosion, don’t brush with the product. Press it gently on your teeth and then keep it in your mouth for a few minutes.
Can it change the ph of my mouth?
Yes, it does wonders for the health of your mouth, killing the bad bacteria that is in
tooth decay and gingivitis.
Can I use an electric toothbrush?
Yes! My daughter and I both use our electric toothbrushes. It does tend to make the bristles go black though. We pull the head off and give it a good clean while we are swooshing it around in our mouths 🙂
Is Black Magic tested on animals?
Nope! I like animals, and my daughter LOVES animals. Animal testing would be out of the question!
Does it have a use by date?
We recommend using it within 6 months. Having said that, just look at it closely. If it looks like it did when you got it, it should be fine. It is natural and has no preservatives; therefore it may go bad if the air is too hot or moist. Keep it clean, cool and dry, and it should last.
Results vary person to person, and there is no guarantee of specific results. My daughter noticed a difference within 2 uses. I noticed a difference after 2 weeks. Note that this will remove STAINS from your teeth and will not work with teeth that have yellowed from age or use of medication.
